Do you suffer from bloating, abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhoea or constipation? Then it is likely that your gut react sensitively to certain nutrients. In 60 to 80% of people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) the symptoms significantly reduce after following the Low FODMAP diet, provided it is applied correctly and personally.

What is the Low FODMAP diet?

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and other Polyols.

These are carbohydrates (sugars) that are not well or incompletely digested. They are found in many foods and can cause IBS symptoms such as gas, cramps, and changes in bowel movements.

The aim of the FODMAP diet is not to eliminate as many foods as possible, but to discover:

  • whether you are sensitive to FODMAPs

  • which FODMAPs cause symptoms

  • in what quantity they are tolerated

This way you learn to enjoy food again, without unnecessary symptoms.

The FODMAP diet consists of 3 phases:

Phase 1: FODMAP elimination (2–6 weeks)

In phase 1 we bring calm to your intestines and we will see if your complaints respond to a low-FODMAP approach. We do this without completely changing your eating pattern.

During a comprehensive dietary assessment, we will look at your current diet, complaints, and lifestyle. Instead of overwhelming you with a lot of new recipes, we will adjust your familiar eating pattern so that it becomes low-FODMAP. This way, the diet is achievable and fits within your life.

Phase 2: FODMAP reintroduction (6–8 weeks)

In this phase, we will systematically reintroduce FODMAPs one by one and in increasing doses.

This way we discover:

  • which FODMAPs trigger complaints

  • from which amount

  • and in which combinations

Phase 3: Personalisation

This is the ultimate goal of the diet.

In this phase:

  • we identify your personal triggers

  • we reduce the number of restrictions

  • we optimise the intake of prebiotics (important nutrients for your gut bacteria)

The result is a personalised, as broad as possible diet in which you know what works for you, even in the long term.
